This large, heavy duty, Hop Spider kit for making beer comes in two heights, providing a whopping 20L or 5 gallon, or 27L or 7 gallon of volume. Use it to add brewing hops to beer wort or using it with flavorings in making wine or brewing tea or to brew kombucha or making other beverages. Having this much space in the wort, brew or wine is helpful for brewing excellent IPAs or other high hops brew or making other flavorful beverages. And with extra stainless banding support down the sides it is reinforced for extra strength.
If adding a lot of hops to your brew, or lot of tea to kombucha, a second or third new spider kit can be used. This hop spider kit comes with a stainless quick link for attaching to a hoist hook for lifting into the brew boil or wine, and has a side hook for securing it the side of a brew kettle or wine fermenter.
To use the Stainless Hop Spider for making beer, place the hop spider over the side of the kettle (it has an arm for resting on the side of the kettle) and ensure that the lower portion is immersed in the wort so that the hops can full dissolve and stay fluid. If the volume in the kettle is not close enough to the top of the kettle that the Hop Spider will be immersed far enough into the wort, then the Hop Spider can be suspended down into the kettle using a new stainless cable kit that we can supply for you (just send us the length you need and we will begin making it; they typically cost about $25 but depend on the length). Using the new cable kit is helpful for suspending the Hops Spider further into wine or kombucha or other beverages.
If wanting to add hops to beer using a Hop Spider after yeast has been added, the hop spider can be suspended on the inside of our 15 gallon and larger fermenters by using one of our sanitary caps with hooks. (Just ensure that the hops spider is sanitized first, which in the BREWHA system can be done by keeping it in the fermenter during the boil.)
If looking for a new filter kit for brewing beer or making wine, that has a screw on lid with smaller size (about 1 gallon or 4L), our new Hop Basket is a good option. This filter has slightly larger mesh size (1mm / 18 mesh) and has a sold bottom to minimize the solids going into the wort or wine. Of our kits, the Hop Basket is more popular for homebrew (5 gallon to 15 gallon sizes) and the Hop Spider kit for commercial brewing but the Hop Spider kits will fit into all sizes of our fermenters.
These kits are more useful than a hop bag as they will not collapse when withdrawn like a bag will, causing much particulate to be squeezed out and into the wort, beer or wine.
Outside Diameter: 27L (7 gallon) 29cm/11.4" / 20L (5 gallon) 29cm/11.4"
Height: 27L (7 gallon) 43cm/17" / 20L (5 gallon) 34cm/13.5"
Screen mesh size: 600 micron (about 30 mesh)
Material: 304 Stainless Steel
Recommended capacity up to 700g/24oz of whole leaf hops and 1400g/48oz of hop pellets when brewing beer. A 600 micron pore size (about 30 mesh) is a good compromise between keeping your hops out of the brew, while letting maximum water pass through and minimal yeast or trub coating the sides. During the brew it is recommended to stir occasionally for full extraction. At the surface of the brew, yeast or other solids from the wort can coat the mesh so it is best to keep it almost fully immersed where possible so fluids can easily pass through the mesh and the high level of yeast at the top doesn't coast the mesh.
A smaller 3L/.75 Gallon Hop Basket with 1000 micron mesh is available here

Bought this to keep solids from clogging my chiller. As previously mentioned, hop contact is reduced, but this is a factor with any such device. Proper recipe and procedural adjustments need to be made.Only negative is that one internal support slat was never welded. It popped out and sliced my hand open (luckily during cleaning and not into beer!) Now I need to get that fixed.I still intend to purchase a 2nd one.
This is a nice bit of gear. Well built and sturdy. Great for up to 1bbl brew kettles. I bought it for my 2bbl setup though hoping it would work but its just too small for that and my whirlpool hops just dont get the contact time, as it quickly setles with the basket No fault of the product though. Great value for price.
Works great to keep hops and other solid adjuncts out of my chiller. For reference, I'm brewing 3 bbl batches.
