Brewing with fresh hops all year long

Brewing with fresh hops has long intrigued me. It is fairly intuitive that fresh hops would have different flavors than dried hops, and being able to grow a key ingredient for your brew has a certain appeal. And, I happen to live in a great spot for it as Vancouver has a good climate for growing hops; hops can be seen in the back yards of many homes around the city wild patches can even be found growing around the city...

How to enter a beer brewing competition

(This article was submitted by Ken Noesgaard of Saskatoon, SK. He documents his experience with brewing beer in the BIAC and the steps involved in entering a brewing competition.) I have been brewing beer since 1985 and all-grain brewing since 1999. Before deciding on my BREWHA BIAC I was mashing in a 10 gallon Gott cooler with a false bottom and boiling in a 20 gallon...

How to quickly transfer beer from your fermenter to a keg

While BREWHA's Fermentor to Keg Racking Hose allows a brewer to easily transfer beer to a keg in an oxygen free environment using the 'beer out' post of the keg, the 'beer out' post on most kegs is through a 1/4" tube which can restrict beer flow and be somewhat time consuming. This article describes an easy method for rapid racking of beer to a keg using a larger diameter hose.

Is a copper still necessary?

A question that is often asked is whether or not it is necessary to have a copper still for producing the best quality whiskey. Purists argue that there is no other proper way to do it and they point to the fact that is has always been done that way. Stainless steel advocates argue that it has been always done that way, because stainless steel was only 'discovered' about a hundred years ago, and...

Does the 3-in-1 (or 4-in-1) tie up your boil kettle?

With the boil kettle being combined with the fermenter, and since boiling takes only a few hours and fermenting can take 1-4+ weeks, the question of equipment tie-up arises. Is the 3-in-1 (or 4-in-1) going to be really helpful, or will it be a nuisance if one wants to brew a second batch but can't boil in it for weeks while the first batch is fermenting and conditioning?

Does brewing your own beer save you money?

Is home brewing really worth it? That is a good question. What is the value of a hobby that brings you immense pleasure and satisfaction? High-end bicycles, ATVs, motorbikes, electronic gear, all cost thousands or even tens of thousands of dollars. The ‘coolness’ of having your own automated brewery in your basement, and the satisfaction of hearing your friends tell you that your beer is the freshest, tastiest beer they have ever had . . . priceless.
